Greg Cornwell/Staff Photographer Senior forward Laura Gosse scored two goals Friday afternoon against Oakland at the CMU Soccer Complex. The Chippewas defeated the Grizzlies, 2-1.

The Central Michigan University soccer team fell to Big Ten powerhouse Michigan 3-0 on Sunday, bringing the Chippewas to 1-3-1 through their first five games.

Two Wolverine goals in the first 15 minutes proved to be the difference in the game.

CMU’s defense improved after the first 20 minutes, surrendering just one second-half goal.

“Overall the performance was solid with a lot to build off of,” said CMU coach Peter McGahey. “We recovered well after the two early goals. Our girls kept the floodgates closed.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell recorded seven saves in the loss.

Senior striker Laura Gosse, who scored a brace in the previous match, recorded two shots on goal.

Gosse currently leads the Chippewas in shots and shots on goal with nine and six respectively . The Chippewas best chance to score came from a corner kick that was cleared off the line by the Wolverines in the second half.

“I wish we had instant replay for that one. That would have made the game 2-1,”  McGahey said.

McGahey played three freshman and five sophomores in the starting XI.

“The experience is invaluable. I think that is the most important thing about today," he said, "We’re really going to take away valuable experience individually and collectivel."

CMU will take on Air Force Friday and 9 p.m.
