CMU enrollment reaches 27,069 students in 2014-15

An influx of new freshmen and international students has helped Central Michigan University raise its total 2014-15 enrollment to 27,069, according to finalized enrollment figures released Friday.

The new numbers represent the fourth highest enrollment figure the CMU community has witnessed in the past 10 years.

Freshman enrollment is up 26.5 percent, bringing in a class of 3,811 new students. That number is up from 3,012 new freshmen in 2013-14.

Bolstering the increase is a boost in undergraduate and graduate international students, a 39.3-percent increase, equating to 1,064 students. Nearly more than 2,500 minority students were also added to CMU's on-campus framework. Graduate students helped raised enrollment numbers with a 12.4-percent increase, as well.

Steven Johnson, vice president of Enrollment and Student Services, said the increase in new freshmen at CMU is impressive because Michigan's total high school senior high class is expected to decline to 90,000 by 2020, compared to the 119,000 in 2008.

The new freshmen have an average high school GPA of of 3.34 and an average ACT score of 22.7.
