Sexual assault issues discussed Sept. 11

The Women and Gender Studies Programming Committee is hosting a networking pizza social Sept. 11 to discuss sexual assault issues on campus.

From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the Maroon and Gold room in the University Center, students will have the opportunity to learn what they can do to promote a campus free from sexual assault.

"What we're trying to do is initially focus on sexual violence on campus," said Joyce Henricks, associate professor in the philosophy department. "There are a lot of organizations dealing with gender-type issues, so we're trying to get students to know what other students are doing so we can coordinate our efforts."

Henricks said there are many more sexual assaults that occur at CMU than are reported to police. While they have their statistics, sexual assault organizations on campus report statistics that are much higher.

The goal is to change the CMU climate to one of safety, respect and support, Henricks said. This is the first time her organization has attempted to coordinate on such a large scale.

"We need to deal with the behavior and the educate on the issue," Henricks said.
