In its most dominant offensive performance of the season thus far, the Central Michigan University soccer team grabbed a 2-0 victory against Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne Friday at the CMU Soccer Complex.

The victory moves the Chippewas to 2-6-1 on the year.

Senior forward Laura Gosse scored her fifth and sixth goals of the season, surpassing her previous single-season record of five.

“It feels good to get over that hurdle,” Gosse said. “I have been really lucky finding my sweet spot and finding connections with the players up top. Today we did the best job all season of getting numbers forward."

Gosse is now tied for sixth overall on the program’s all-time scoring list with 19 career goals.

“If you can score in multiple ways, you are going to find ways to win games,” Head coach Peter McGahey said. “We were able take a goal from the run of play and capitalize on the mess of a quality set piece. When you do that, you are able to keep yourself in games and keep other teams under pressure.”

The Chippewas outshoot the Mastodons 20 to 7. It was the first time the women have outshot an opponent in 2014.

The CMU defense also had an impressive outing. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Bunnell recorded her second clean sheet of her career, while the defenders in front of her allowed only two IPFW shots on goal.

“(The shutout) feels like an accomplishment as a team,” Bunnell said. “My defense definitely stepped up in some areas where my distribution got shaky. It was definitely a confidence booster for my backline and myself.”

The Chippewas open the Mid-American Conference schedule next Friday when they host Northern Illinois.
