DEBONA: Soccer team running out of time

With high expectations as it entered the season, the CMU soccer team has largely disappointed this fall.

With only one victory in five Mid-American Conference games, the Chippewas are running out of margin for error.

Sophomore goalkeeper Heather Lauefer started her second game of the season Friday and contributed to a desperate CMU victory recording her first shutout of the year.

The last place team of each conference does not make the MAC Tournament. Heading into this weekend’s action, the Chippewas sit in that last place position in the MAC West.

The team’s chances of making the tournament are still alive, but only if it can defeat Buffalo.

With 26 goals allowed, Lauefer might be the Chippewas’ last hope. If she can continue to keep the net clean, CMU have a legitimate shot of going to the MAC Tournament.

CMU’s top three point leaders (Laura Gosse, Emily Cooksey and Jennifer Gassman) are all seniors.

These seniors have made their presence on the team felt. If McGahey’s team is to succeed, his young talent must put the ball in the back of the net.

The Chippewas have not scored in regulation in nearly a month. Their last goal came against Northern Illinois University on September 26.

The Chippewas have five matches left to prove themselves.

If they fail to do so, it will leave their seniors with a sour taste in their mouths at the end of their playing career.
