Two Mecosta County men were arrested Wednesday by Mount Pleasant police for three counts of breaking and entering a vehicle.

Officers were investigating multiple complaints of car larcenies in the 1200 block of Bruce Street when they noticed several footprints around one of the vehicles. Given the snow that fell Tuesday night, the officers knew that the footprints must have been made early Wednesday morning before the owner was awake.

Officers tracked the footprints for more than 12 blocks across Broadway and Adams Streets to the doorway of the perpetrators.

Mount Pleasant Police Department Public Information Officer Jeff Browne said he was not surprised to see the men apprehended.

"We're pretty good at tracking people," Browne said. "Even though it can be very difficult in the middle of a city."

While tracking the footprints officers noted that the two men, 18-year-old Preston Muscott of Canadian Lakes and 17-year-old Aaron Swanson of Stanwood, tried to gain entry into more than 50 vehicles.

While being questioned by police both men had little to say about their involvement in the larcenies, but property was found at their residence linking them to the crime.

Muscott and Swanson were arrested and lodged at the Isabella County Jail on a three-count misdemeanor warrant for breaking and entering in a vehicle. Their bond was set at $20,000.

The investigation remains open and ongoing as officers attempt to identify and contact any victims who had their cars broken into on Wednesday Feb. 25. Anyone with information pertaining to the crime should call the police at 989-779-5100, or Central Dispatch at 989-773-1000.
