Miami University senior pitcher Ryan Powers was drafted in the 22nd round of the MLB draft by the Philadelphia Phillies but it was Central Michigan University sophomore pitcher Nick Deeg who shut down hitters Friday.

Deeg (4-2, 2.00 ERA) pitched a complete game shutout, going nine innings allowing four hits and no walks while striking out six batters for CMU (16-10, 3-1 Mid-American Conference).

“He threw his changeup very well, I thought,” said Head Coach Steve Jaksa. “We played flawless defense, we didn’t give up any errors. Then we start tacking on some runs, so we were able to keep the pressure on them and Nick was able to keep his focus.”

The 6-5 lefty from Lake Orion is the second Chippewa to throw a complete game, with junior Jason Gamble throwing one Sunday against Ohio.

The Chippewa offense had no trouble, scoring in every inning but the second, third and ninth.

Junior outfielder Logan Regnier led the team with four hits, four RBI’s and three runs. The Novi native nearly hit for the cycle, picking up a single, a double, a home run and a single where he reached third base after a RedHawk error.

Regnier came into Friday second in the nation with five triples, one shy of the most in the NCAA. He has a team-high .358 batting average.

The RedHawks (4-17, 2-2 MAC) committed five errors, equating to three unearned runs for Powers, who pitched seven innings.

“We start out tomorrow at 0-0,” Jaksa said. “Obviously we could win the series tomorrow. Your focus is to go in there and play the same way, to get that starter’s pitch count up.”

Junior pitcher Adam Aldred will pitch tomorrow for the Chippewas at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the second game of the three-game series against Miami (Ohio).
