Recently elected Mount Pleasant City Commissioner Nick Madaj and City Manager Nancy Ridley spoke to house members of the Student Government Association regarding events covered in a meeting between city commission members and members of the student liaison committee Nov. 11.

While Madaj was somewhat quiet throughout the presentation, Ridley farmed questions from members of the House on their opinion on how students are regarded by residents within the community.

The overwhelming opinion from members of the House was that an ongoing stigma of Central Michigan University being a party college, coupled with the arrests of non-CMU party-goers being inaccurately branded as students, leave for a tense relationship.

As a result, an increase of police presence is enforced, said House member Connor Stein.

The Birmingham sophomore said members of the Mount Pleasant Police Department have been very understanding and respectful of students during weekends of high levels of partying, such as Western Weekend or St. Patrick's Day.

"We're just trying to find ways to keep the students and the city happy. If anything, the ultimate goal is to make things safe," he said. "Citations suck, but the police are there to ultimately look out for people."

A representative for the Sigma Alpha fraternity, Stein also said Greek organizations receive an unfair amount of blame for the partying simply for their location.

"On the whole, (Greek life) has been very helpful and willing to work with us most of the time," Ridley said.

She encouraged any students with ideas pertaining to student/resident relationships to contact her by email at manager@mt-pleasant.org.
