Rapid Reaction: Wrestling finishes second at MAC Tournament, Ellingwood wins 184-pound title

      YPSILANTI — Central Michigan wrestling had four wrestlers competing for a Mid-American Conference Tournament championship Sunday. 

      While only one took a title, seven Chippewas qualified for the NCAA Tournament later this month as CMU took second place at the Convocation Center.

      After losing its first three title matches, junior 184-pounder Jordan Ellingwood was CMU's last hope for a champion at the tournament. The sophomore defeated Jack Dechow of Old Dominion 7-3 to win the lone championship for the Chippewas and the first of Ellingwood’s career.

      Seniors Mike Ottinger (174), Zach Horan (141) and Lucas Smith (157) will all compete at NCAA Tournament in their final year, while junior Corey Keener (133), sophomores Jordan Ellingwood (197) and Brent Fleetwood (125) and freshman Justin Oliver (149) also qualified for at-large bids.

      Ottinger, Keener and Oliver all came up just short of a title victory, as they finished in second place in their respective weight classes.

      Ottinger's match went into double overtime against Missouri’s Blaise Butler. Butler defeated Ottinger thanks to an extra riding-time point.

      CMU finished in second place as a team at the tournament with 93.5 points. Missouri won the tournament for a fourth straight season, finishing with 127.5 points. The Tigers also won the regular season MAC Championship.
