Academic Senate discusses course requirements

At its April 19 meeting, the Academic Senate watched a presentation by Robert Roe, director of the Office of Institutional Research, and Tracy Brown, the director of the General Education Program, on providing writing Intensive courses so all students reach requirements before graduation.

Roe said the university would need to provide 16,000 seats in WI courses per year to ensure on-campus students could graduate on time. He said although Central Michigan University could meet those requirements, the university still needed to increase the number of seats available for Global Campus.

The Senate voted to approve the list of graduating students for May. It also voted to increase the Graduate Certificate Credit Cap from 18 to 21 credits.

Senator Mary Senter joined Philosophy and Religion Professor Andrew Blom, interim director of Women and Gender Studies, and Shannon Joliff-Detorre, director of the Office of LGBTQ Services, to present a report on the campus climate for women and LGBTQ students.

Senter presented several statistics on how students felt about the gender climate at CMU, including whether they felt it was safe for women and LGBTQ students or had heard negative comments about said groups.

Joliff-Detorre said her office was understaffed and unable to provide the type of education and support on campus needed.

The presenters also expressed support for the proposed Gender Equity Center on campus.
