Softball begins pivotal series against Eastern Michigan Friday

After winning five of its last six games, the Chippewas traveled to Ann Arbor Wednesday to take on No. 2 University of Michigan, but couldn't knock off its second ranked opponent of the season.

The Chippewas fell 5-2.

CMU returns home Friday for a crucial three-game series against Eastern Michigan, who currently sits in eighth place in the Mid-American Conference, a spot ahead of CMU.

In order to qualify for the MAC Tournament, the Chippewas need to improve their  conference standing to within the top eight teams.

"We need to play like this every game with this energy, passion and poise with this 'go get em' attitude," said Head Coach Margo Jonker.

After losing three straight conference games in the beginning of the month, CMU moved up a spot in the rankings thanks to a four-game winning streak.

A series-win against EMU this weekend would put CMU in eighth place, jumping the Eagles in the standings.

EMU will enter the series on a four game losing streak that includes three losses to Northern Illinois and one to Michigan State.

CMU defeated EMU in both meetings last season, but have yet to face the Eagles during the 2016 campaign.

The Chippewas conclude MAC play in a two day double-header that will take place at first place Northern Illinois starting on May 5.
