Women's baskeball in preseason WNIT field for first time in program history

It was announced Wednesday that the Central Michigan women's basketball team has been included in the 2016 WNIT preseason field for the first time in the program's history. This is the 23rd time this preseason field has been released.

Of the 16 teams to make it in the field, CMU is the only team from the Mid-American Conference to make it.

"The preseason WNIT field features teams that will be heading into their best years and are primed for a breakthrough," said Tournament Director Renee Carlson. "It's fantastic to showcase programs that are on the rise and will represent their schools so well in the national spotlight."

The other 15 teams in the field are Abilene Christian, Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Elon, Fordham, Furman, Green Bay, Little Rock, Missouri, Nebraska, North Texas, Notre Dame, Omaha, UT Rio Grande Valley and Washington. 11 of the 15 teams were either in the NCAA or WNIT Tournament this past March.

CMU is also being projected to win the conference title.

CMU won the regular season MAC Championship this past season, but lost in the finals of the MAC Tournament to Buffalo. They then went on to lose in the first round of the WNIT at home to Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis.

The Chippewas lose just two seniors from last season, guard Da'Jourie Turner and forward Chelsea Lynn. The only starter they are losing is Turner.

CMU went 22-11 and 14-4 in the MAC during the 2015-16 season.
