Fowler works out for NBA teams as 2016 NBA Draft approaches

With the draft a week away, NBA teams have been holding workouts for players they have an interest in taking on June 23.

The New York Knicks don't have any picks in the 2016 draft, but still have a few guys on their radar to sign as undrafted free agents or make a trade to get a pick in the draft. One of those players is former Central Michigan standout guard Chris Fowler, reported by ESPN's Ian Begley.

Fowler was a captain for the CMU basketball team all four years under Head Coach Keno Davis. He is CMU's all-time leader in assists at 686, free-throws made at 475 and free-throws attempted at 680. He's also third in steals with 185 and fifth in points with 1,736. He averaged 14.5 points per game during his career at CMU, and averaged 16.5 points per game his senior season.

"Chris has worked hard his entire life. I was fortunate to work with him and our fans were fortunate to see him," said CMU Head Coach Keno Davis. "He's an extremely tough worker and someone with character that's off the charts. It'll be exciting to see the career path that Chris goes down."

Davis also said that Fowler has worked out for several other teams, including the Toronto Raptors and the Utah Jazz. Davis said he has received phone calls in regards to Fowler as a person and his work ethic.

"During the season you get phone calls, and they want to know things that they can't see in the stat sheet or on video," Davis said. "They want to know what kind of person he is, what kind of teammate, those kind of things. A lot of attention is given to the off-court questions than it was 10-15 years ago. Where ever Chris ends up, someone is obviously going to get a talented player."

Until his senior year, Fowler played and started in every game for the Chippewas. Fowler played the first game of the 2015-16 season, but then missed the following seven games due to an undisclosed injury. He was out of action for a month, as it was Fowler's first long-term injury in college.

The last Chippewa to be drafted into the NBA was Chris Kaman in 2003. Only three players, including Kaman, from the Mid-American Conference have been selected in the NBA Draft this century. Kaman was the only first-round pick of the three.
