City's drinking water meets federal and state requirements in 2015

Drinking water in the City of Mount Pleasant met all federal and state requirements over the past year, according to the Annual Drinking Water Quality Report.

Mount Pleasant Water Superintendent Malcolm Fox will present the report at Monday's city commission meeting at City Hall. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

The report details testing results from Jan. 1, 2015 through Dec. 31, 2015.

The city's water is drawn from seven groundwater wells and a Ranney Collector well, located southwest of Mount Pleasant, adjacent to the Chippewa River. The groundwater wells are located south and southwest of Mount Pleasant and range from 120 to 465 feet deep.

Water from the wells and the Ranney Collector is pumped to the city's Water Treatment Plant at 4195 S. Lincoln Rd where it is softened, filtered, disinfected and sent to the distribution system for the city's customers.

According to a 2003 state-ran assessment of the seven groundwater wells, the city's water susceptibility to contamination, rated on a six-tier scale from "very-low" to "very-high, ranges from very low to moderate. The susceptibility of the Ranney Collector to potential contamination is high, according to the report. The ratings are based primarily on geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contamination sources.
