Pelowski confident for second season as field hockey coach

Palmyra sophomore Haley Bova goes for ball during Central Michigan University's home field hockey game on Sunday, Oct. 11.

For second-year field hockey head coach Molly Pelowski, last season's 2-15 record was less than stellar. For Pelowski, 2016 is a redemption year.

"I really feel like this year we have a much larger talent pool to draw from," Pelowski said. "We got great depth through the lineup. I'm feeling pretty confident that we're going to be able to give the opponent a lot more looks."

Scoring goals was a struggle for the Chippewas last season, averaging only one goal per game while their opponents averaged close to four. CMU averaged only five shots on goal per game, many of which came from now-graduated midfielder Kaysie Gregory — an offensive threat who's void will be difficult to fill.

"Our emphasis is team offense. I think right now, it's hard to predict who is going to really step up and be a goal scorer," Pelowski said. "I can tell you right now that we have quite a few people in practice who are scoring goals. The effort isn't going to be on one person's shoulders."

Notable returners for the Chippewas include Belgium native senior Maude Stellars, who scored four goals last season, and junior Alex Gonda.

"They're really going to lead our program to creating more offensive threats," Pelowski said. "We're just trying to develop a greater intensity when we play."

In addition to the loss of Gregory, goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds also graduated in the spring, leaving the job to either sophomore Lilly Amadio or freshman Abigail Ebersole. Amadio received no playing time last season after suffering an injury.

CMU kicked off its season on Tuesday with a 4-3 win in an exhibition match against University of Toronto.

"We're much more fit than we were last year," Pelowski said. "I feel like we're just going to be able to jump right out of the gate playing at a high level."
