Program Board Update: Group to collaborate for poetry event, show 'Finding Dory'

Program Board will be presenting a new event every day this week.

The group will collaborate with CMU Public Broadcasting for a presentation of the Contemporary Black Poetry Project at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium.

Toi Derricotte, Herbert Woodward Martin and Naomi Long Madgett, whose ages range from 75 to 93, will share the stage for the first time "for an hour of poetry that illustrates the joys and tears of the African American experience in the 20th century," according to the event's Facebook page.

Tickets are free but must be reserved online here.

Program Board President Angie Distelrath said the event will probably bring in a different audience than the Back to School Comedy Jam, which was held earlier this month in McGuirk Arena.

“We are hoping we can still bring in the students," Distelrath said. "It is a smaller venue so we’re hoping we don’t have to turn away too many people. We’re excited to see how that turns out.”

Distelrath also said Program Board will also bring poet Kit Yan, who is a transgender Asian American slam poet, in mid-October.

Program Board will also show "Finding Dory" at 9 p.m. Thursday at Finch Fieldhouse. This will be the third movie shown this semester, and Distelrath is hoping it becomes a tradition that brings in a number of students.

“We’re really passionate about the movies because it brings all the students of all interests and everything in," Distelrath said. "Those are front loaded to bring those crowds in.”

Distelrath said the group plans to show "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" on Tuesday, Oct. 4 during Homecoming. She added there will be two showings in the Bovee University Center auditorium.
