The 2016-17 Central Michigan Wrestling season is officially underway.

The Chippewas held their annual intrasquad meet in McGuirk Arena on Sunday to get a gauge of the team's talent for the upcoming season. The 10 matches held during the match split the team into two squads with the Maroon team defeating the Gold, 26-14.

CMU's head coach Tom Borrelli said he was pleased with his teams effort during the meet.

“I liked that are guys were scoring points” Borrelli said.“They were trying to score points. Normally these matches are kind of boring. These guys wrestle each other a lot in the practice room.”

Only one match resulted in a pin, coming late in the third period from senior Austin Severn, who pinned sophomore Tyrus Kemp in the 197-pound match. All other matches ended in either a decision or by 15-point mercy.

The Chippewas will begin their season at 9 a.m. on Saturday Nov. 5 at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti.
