Elderly man dead after teen backs vehicle into him

A 92-year-old man has died after being struck by a vehicle while walking Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The incident happened around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday near the corner of East Broomfield Street and Churchill Boulevard in Mount Pleasant, said Officer Jeff Browne of the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

A 16-year-old was backing out of a driveway when the driver struck the 92-year-old man, Browne said. The man was walking across the sidewalk while the driver was backing out.

The older man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Browne said.

MPPD has conducted an investigation, Browne said. The Prosecuting Attorney’s office will determine whether or not to issue charges.

The Morning Sun reports the victim is Larry Collins, a former Mount Pleasant city manager that served from 1961 until 1968. Mount Pleasant police have not released the man's name.
