Brandon Stanton, photographer, author and founder of “Humans of New York” will be speaking at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28 in Plachta Auditorium.

Stanton is most well-known for his blog, “Humans of New York.” According to Stanton, “Humans of New York” started as a simple photography project, but evolved into a multimedia blog which combines portraits and captions to tell compelling stories about the inhabitants of New York City. The blog inspired two best-selling books: “Humans of New York” and “Humans of New York: Stories.” Today, “Humans of New York” has over 20 million followers on social media.

Stanton will be the kickoff to the Fall 2017 Central Michigan University Speaker Series, organized by University Events.

The event is sponsored by the College of Business Administration.

Stanton was chosen by the CMU Speaker Series Committee, a group of faculty, students and staff at CMU.

Misheaila Neil, director of University Events and a member of the committee said the committee chose Stanton to speak this fall because they wanted the students and community to get inspired while it is early in the semester.

“He’s somebody who charted his own course, and has been very successful,” Neil said. “He is also really connected to the student experience.”

Stanton plans to speak for about 45 minutes and will have a 15-minute Q&A session afterward.

The event is free and open to the public.

The next speaker will be poet Joy Harjo, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Plachta Auditorium.
