Eight arrests for operating while intoxicated were made by the Mount Pleasant Police Department during Homecoming Weekend 2017 – compared to two in 2016.

MPPD Officer Jeff Browne said five of those OWI arrests took place starting Saturday night. Browne said the sharp increase in OWI arrests during Homecoming Weekend is concerning.

“The message ‘don’t drink and drive’ has been out for years and yet, our numbers statistically have been going up,” he said. “It’s not monumental but it’s still an increase. That’s concerning. We’re always looking for ways to address those types of issues and try and curb those numbers.”

There were 43 citations issued by the MPPD this weekend and 18 people were lodged, including 13 on Saturday. The MPPD classified the weekend as being from 7 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13 to 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 15.

The MPPD registered 205 calls for service this Homecoming Weekend. Four people were cited for nuisance gatherings for two different instances. There were two people cited for minor in possession as opposed to 16 incidents last year. Two people received citations or arrests for open intoxicants this year compared to 11 in 2016.

Browne attributed the rainy weather and long waits for taxi cabs as reasons people made a “poor decision” to drink and drive when discussing OWI arrests. He said this year's overall statistics were comparable to Homecoming Weekend 2016.

The MPPD worked with the Mount Pleasant Fire Department this weekend and assisted the Central Michigan University Police Department with tailgates.

“We’re always working in conjunction with Central Michigan University to make Mount Pleasant a better place,” Browne said.
