William Serrin.

William Serrin Jr., a Central Michigan University alumnus who was inducted into the CMU Journalism Hall of Fame and the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, died of a heart attack on Feb. 22 in his home in Boca Raton, Florida. He was 78.

Serrin graduated from CMU in 1961. He went on to work for the Detroit Free Press, where he reported on the 1967 Detroit riots and helped the paper win a Pulitzer Prize. He was later inducted into the CMU and Michigan Journalism Halls of Fame. Serrin taught journalism at New York University until he retired in 2014.

According to the Detroit Free Press, who spoke to his family, there was no funeral, but a celebration for family and close friends. Instead of flowers, donations may be sent to Carlin Alumni House, 524 E. Bellows St. in Mount Pleasant, or cmich.edu/giving for the Serrin scholarship fund for aspiring journalists at CMU.
