Senior quarterback Shane Morris poses for a portrait on Mar. 16 in the Indoor Athletic Center.

For the last time in his collegiate career, fifth-year senior quarterback Shane Morris stepped on the field in an effort to impress scouts across the country.

He displayed his talents for scouts from all 32 National Football League teams, along with staff members from the Canadian Football League.

“The guys did great and it was really good throwing one last time with everyone,” Morris said. “We had a really good turnout from scouts and coaches. I’ve been training my whole life for today.”

Since graduating from De La Salle Collegiate, Morris was well known for throwing power. During Pro Day, he aimed to display his ability to throw the ball accurately.

“I was looking to show accuracy,” Morris said. “Teams know I have a strong arm, so I was trying to pinpoint accuracy and I think I did that.”

Senior quarterback Shane Morris competes in the annual CMU Pro Day on Mar. 16 in the Indoor Athletic Center.

Since finishing the 2017 season for CMU, Morris has heard from “a couple” NFL teams. He is just hoping for a chance to make training camp.

“I’m just hoping for the best,” Morris said. “I want to get a shot in camp. I think my knowledge and IQ of the game of football will weigh a ton in a quarterback meeting room. Having all the different coaches and offensive coordinators in the last five years will help too.”

Morris originally committed and signed to play for the University of Michigan, but did not earn much playing time over his time with the Wolverines. He took his degree, packed his bags and traveled to Mount Pleasant for the final season of college football.

“Shane’s passion for the game stood out to me,” said CMU head coach John Bonamego. “He could’ve taken his Michigan degree and go to work. I believe he had something to prove and clearly had a love for the game. This gave him an opportunity to do that.”

The pro-style quarterback is currently uninterested in the Arena Football League or CFL. He is also not looking at ever playing in the XFL, which is set to restart in 2020.

Morris has his eyes on one prize: the NFL.

“Right now, my goal is to play in the NFL,” Morris said. “Hopefully, I get that opportunity. That’s it right now.”

During the 2017 season, Morris completed 249-of-446 passes for 3,237 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Following CMU’s Pro Day on March 16, Morris will head back to Ann Arbor to throw at Michigan’s Pro Day on March 23.

“(Jim) Harbaugh called and asked if I would like to do that,” Morris said. “I talk to him all the time and we have a really good relationship.”

No matter where Morris ends up, he knows one thing: “I’m a Chippewa for life.”
