How graduating seniors can make the most of their remaining weeks at CMU

On Saturday, May 10 2014, CMU hosted three Graduate and Undergraduate commencement ceremonies in McGuirk arena.

Well, seniors, our time has come. After endless hours in Charles V. Park Library, hundreds of mind-numbing pages written for research papers and more trips to Wayside Central than we’d care to admit, graduation is right around the corner.

We only have about three weeks left of our college careers before we head out into a world that is far scarier. I don’t know about you, but the thought of this makes me want to soak up as many memories as I can over the next few weeks. Below is a list of ways we can make our last moments at Central Michigan University count.

  1. Make your own bar crawl.
With a little confidence and dedication, I believe that you can achieve the unachievable. That’s right, get at least one drink at every bar in town in one night. From The Cabin to The Green Spot, you might surprise yourself at what you’ll find.

If you’re not into the drinking scene, that’s totally OK too. You can make this a coffee shop crawl or maybe even a mission to find the perfect ice cream cone. Whatever you choose to explore, let loose — this is your last chance to use the excuse of “Whatever, I’m in college.”
  2. Visit the “townie” locations of Mount Pleasant.
Check out my top suggestions to make sure you hit every stop along the way.

You can’t consider yourself a true CMU grad until you’ve experienced all of the underground hotspots in Mount Pleasant. Maybe you’ll find your new guilty pleasure and/or meet your new "townie" best friend.
  3. Show up to class looking like an ultimate slob.

Even if you do this already, make it a point to go all out in your most comfortable clothes. You’ll never be able to do this in the real world — unless you’ve found a chill company that will let you, and if that’s the case, please forward my resume to your supervisor.
  4. Send a thank you to someone who has made an impact on your college experience.
Rather than just a simple email, handwrite a note to them — it shows more effort and thoughtfulness. Whether it’s a professor, a boss or mentor, this is a good chance to maintain the connection you once built with them and they’ll appreciate it more than you know.
  5. Have one last supper at the RFOC or Fresh Food Company.
When is the last time you got to pig out at a campus dining hall? If your answer is within the last month, feel free to slide into my DMs so I can join you more often. If you’re like me and it’s been a couple years, find yourself an underclassmen friend who can guest pass you in. There’s one golden rule here: don’t leave until you’ve had multiple servings and can no longer breathe. Once you leave this place, you’ll find yourself wondering why you didn’t take advantage of this more often.

It’s not too late to FOC yourself one last time.
  6. Float down the chip river.
If it ever gets higher than 60 degrees in Michigan, that is. This is a CMU student tradition that must be completed before you move away from Mount P. Get a cheap raft from a local sporting goods store, grab some refreshments and hit the river with some of your best friends. You’ll find a greater appreciation for Mount Pleasant and its scenery than ever before.
  7. Ugly cry.
Not that I’ve done this six times this week or anything, but if I did, it would be totally acceptable, right?

While you’re enjoying every last moment with your closest friends, take a moment to soak it all in. This is the last time you’ll be within a 5 mile radius of all your friends and have free time to do so. We’ve experienced a lot in these past four-ish years at CMU. We’ve made friends and memories to last a lifetime. We should be super grateful for that.

They say college goes by quick, but I think I can blink slower than the time it took to get to where we are. It’s been a wild ride, so let’s continue to live up these last few weeks of college while we can.

I’m not crying, you’re crying.
