Three finalists have been named in the dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences search and each candidate will visit campus later this month, the university announced April 11.

The finalists are:

  • Richard Rothaus —  vice chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs at North Dakota University System
  • Robert Matz — interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at George Mason University
  • Franklin Goza — associate dean and professor of sociology and the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater

Each candidate will participate in an open forum later this month. The forums will take place from 3-3:50 p.m. in the Bovee University Center Auditorium on the candidates' selected dates.

Rothaus will take part in an open forum on April 16, Matz on April 23 and Goza on April 24. The forums are open to the public.

The search committee comprises 15 members and is chaired by Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson, the dean of the College of Education and Human Services. The committee was assisted in their search by search firm Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates.

Those who cannot attend the event can view videos of the events on the Office of the Provost website. People can also give feedback to the candidates at the same place.

Macy Taylor currently serves as the interim dean of the college. Former CHSBS Dean Pamela Gates agreed to a nearly $300,000 separation agreement with the university. In September, CMU announced that Gates would retire Jan. 15.

The college’s website states the dean is responsible for: “all operations of the college and provides leadership for all undergraduate and graduate programs within the college. The dean also will serve on the Council of Deans, Academic Senate and Academic Planning Council.”
