Community members will have the opportunity to give back to Isabella County youth while pigging out on coney dogs at the 13th annual Coneys for a Cause on June 13 at Pixie Restaurant.

Coney dogs will be sold for $1.19 all day, and all proceeds will be split between the Mount Pleasant Police Youth Services Unit and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Public Information Officer Jeff Brown said the Youth Services Unit use the proceeds to help fund their annual Youth Police Academy, which is a free program for Isabella County youth in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

From July 29 to Aug. 15, Youth Police Academy participants will be mentored by police officers and learn more about what their jobs entail. Additionally, Brown said the participants are "exposed to a wide array of government work" so they learn about the work in all forces of local government.

The annual "Pixie Pig Out", when contestants compete to see who can eat the most coney dogs in 15 minutes, will take place at 7 p.m. Brown said the current record is 13 coneys, and the community is encouraged to come cheer on the contestants.

In addition to being able to buy coneys at the restaurant, customers can pre-order to have the coney dogs delivered by an officer of the Youth Services Unit or a representative of Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Order forms must be filled out by 3 p.m. on June 12.
