Karl Smart to be CBA dean starting October

Beginning Oct. 1, Karl Smart will serve as interim dean of the College of Business Administration.

Provost Michael Gealt announced Smart's appointment on July 12, according to a press release from the university.

Smart has been interim associate dean of the college since January of 2017. In his position, he initiated a faculty mentoring program that supports more than 150 faculty members. He is currently working to receive accreditation for the college's Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

He joined Central Michigan University's business information systems faculty in 2002. He was a faculty member and department chair of business information systems from 2006-09 and 2010-17. He was assistant dean for assessment of learning from 2015-17.

From 2010-11, Smart was interim director of CMU's Isabella Bank Institute for Entrepreneurship, and was founding director of the Information Management Institute from 2012-17.

Smart earned a doctoral degree from the University of Florida in rhetorical strategies and technical communication. He holds a master's degree from Utah State University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Utah. Before coming to CMU, Smart held teaching positions at Michigan State University and Brigham University in Utah.

Smart will begin his position in October following the retirement of Charles Crespy.
