The weekend ahead: Events and entertainment in Mount Pleasant

Take a look at events and workshops happening within the Mount Pleasant community this weekend:

Thursday, Sept. 20

  • Learn to make jewelry -- From 5-8 p.m., Deb Birkam will teach attendees how to make a basic jewelry set. The workshop costs $40-$45 and will be held in the Idonea Hersee Classroom at Art Reach downtown Mount Pleasant. No experience necessary.
  • "Paint and Pour" with Mama Bair Art -- Create paint pour art from 6-8 p.m. at the Painted Turtle. Cost of the workshop varies from $25-$45 depending on the attendee's choice of canvas size. Contact 989-317-8008 to reserve a space.
  • Open mic night at Hunter's Ale House -- Hunter's Ale House hosts an open mic beginning at 9:30 p.m. every Thursday. 

Friday, Sept. 21

  • 11th annual Walt Whitman "Leaves of Grass" marathon reading -- Start your Friday bright and early at 7:30 a.m. by reading through Whitman's classic poetry collection, "Leaves of Grass." The free event will take place at Fabiano Gardens and participants may come and go throughout the day. The reading normally finishes late afternoon.
  • Sylvan Solace mushroom foray --  Sister Marie Kopin from the North American Mycological Association will lead participants in a free mushroom search from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sylvan Solace Preserve.   • Job fair -- From 12:30 - 3:30 p.m., Mid Michigan college will host a free job fair that is open to the public. Attendants should wear professional attire and bring an updated resume. Contact  (989) 386-6614  or visit the event's website for more information.
  • Into the Light: Cancer Awareness Walk -- Celebrating its 20th year, the Into the Light: Cancer Awareness Walk will take place from 4-10 p.m. at the Isabella County Fairgrounds. For information regarding forming a team, contact  Deanna Kremsreiter at (989) 330-1978. 

Saturday, Sept. 22

  • Ninth Annual Central Michigan HIV/Aids 5k Rainbow Run/Walk --  The 5k will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Island Park. The Central Michigan District Health Department will donate 100% of the proceeds to help individuals living with HIV/Aids in the Mount Pleasant community. Online registration ends Sept. 21 and costs $25. 
  • Yarn Spinning Workshop -- Learn how to spin your own yarn with Julie Tyslicky at Art Reach of Mid Michigan. Cost of the workshop is $35-$40. Call 989-773-3689 or visit the Art Reach website to register. 
  • Paint and Sip-Wine-O -- From 6-8 p.m. at Roz's Diner,  Mama Bair Art will guide participants in acrylic painting on canvas. Cost varies from $25-$40 based on participant choice of canvas size.
