Women's basketball picked to finish No. 1 in Mid-American Conference preseason poll

One season ago, the Central Michigan women's basketball team was selected in the preseason to finish No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference. Head coach Sue Guevara's group dominated the MAC and made a run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

Once again, the Chippewas are the No. 1 pick in the conference prior to the 2018-19 season. The team was selected to win the MAC West, regular-season title and tournament championship.

But Guevara remains focused on the end goal.

"Our program appreciates the respect that my fellow coaches have for our returning players," Guevara said. "It's not about where you're picked early, it's about where you finish. We're looking forward to competing. Whatever the picks are, that's what the picks are, but it's all about March."

CMU received all 12 votes to take the MAC West, finishing with 72 points in the poll. Among 12 ballots, the Chippewas were at the top with nine to win the overall regular-season title and eight to hoist the league tournament championship.

All votes were made by MAC coaches.

Behind CMU in the MAC West was Toledo (No. 2), Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, Ball State and Western Michigan.

On the MAC East side of the voting, Buffalo was selected to finish at the top, ahead of Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron.

Buffalo, which the Chippewas defeated 96-91 in the MAC Tournament title last season, received three votes to win the league postseason championship.

Senior guard Presley Hudson and senior forward Reyna Frost were named to the Preseason All-MAC West Team. At the MAC Tournament in 2018, Frost won the Most Valuable Player award.

The Chippewas open the 2018-19 season with an exhibition game against Northwood University at noon on Nov. 1 before tipping off the regular season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 against Oakland University at McGuirk Arena.
