Due to the ice and snow on roads, the Central Michigan University Police Department has been called to 19 on-campus car accidents.

“We’ve been called to 13 accidents on campus in the past week (Feb. 4 - Feb. 11) due to the icy roads,” said CMUPD Lt. Cameron Wassman. “Some in the parking lots and some on the roads.”

Since Feb. 11, CMUPD has responded to six more on-campus car accidents. Five occurred in parking lots and one occurred on the road.

Wassman encourages extra careful driving and alertness in the icy parking lots and roads.

Also this week, CMUPD pulled over two vehicles for a traffic stop and reported that both drivers had no car insurance.

One of the drivers, a 63-year-old male, was pulled over at 1 p.m. on Feb., 8 for broken brake lights and had his car towed after showing that he had no insurance.

The other driver was an 18-year-old female, who was pulled over at 10 a.m. on Feb. 11 for speeding 38 mph in a 25 mph zone. Her car was towed as well.

In Michigan, having no car insurance is a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to one year in jail or a fine of $1,125.

“It’s not all that uncommon to come across an uninsured car on campus. I don’t know any specific numbers right now, but we have seen an increase over the years since insurance costs have gone up,” Wassman said.
