School of Music to perform 'Sweeney Todd' starting Friday
The cast of the 2018 production “The Mikado,” perform the late 1800's opera.
Central Michigan Unversity's School of Music will be showcasing its 2019 opera production "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" this weekend.
Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. March 15 and 16 and 2 p.m. March 17 at the Staples Family Concert Hall.
The Central Michigan University Symphony Orchestra will be featured, with undergraduate students making up most of the lead roles. This contrasts with other universities that utilize graduate students for similar productions.
Stephen Sondheim developed "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" in 1979 based off a 1973 play by Christopher Bond and book by Hugh Wheeler.
Last year’s production was a rendition of “The Mikado,” a late 1800’s opera by Authur Sullivan. Other past productions include “Pirates of Penzance,” “La Bohème,” “Don Giovanni,” and “The Magic Flute.”
Tickets are available online through the Ticket Central website or by calling 989-774-3045. Prices are $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults. Children under 13 are not recommended for viewing.
