Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that two passengers were killed in the crash. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the car, was the only person killed in the crash.

A fatal crash between a car and a Chippewa Hills School bus left one passenger dead and two students injured Thursday evening.

Police responded to the car vs. bus crash at 9:11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, on Coldwater Road, near River Road in Broomfield Township, according to a news release issued by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office.

Preliminary investigation indicated the passenger car was southbound on Coldwater Road when it entered the oncoming lane and collided with the northbound school bus, police said.

The school bus was transporting approximately 15 students from the Chippewa Hills JV Football Team, as well as coaches and staff, the release said.

Deputies said the passenger car immediately caught on fire upon impact and sustained heavy damage.

The female driver of the passenger car, who was the sole occupant in the vehicle, was killed in the crash, police said. The sheriff’s office is working with the Sparrow Medical Examiner’s Office to identify the victim.

Two students on the school bus sustained minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to a local hospital, the release said. Students were transported by a second bus to a reunification site away from the crash to be picked up by parents.

The crash remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office plans to release more information regarding the crash, according to the news release.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted on the scene by Wheatland Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Mobile Medical Response and Isabella County Road Commission.

Chippewa Hills School District posted the following statement on Facebook: "Thank you to our coaches as they did all they could to help in the situation and the driver for handling the accident as best as possible. And finally thank you to all the Warrior families. Glad all of our students are safe."
