Central Michigan to play San Diego State in New Mexico Bowl

Central Michigan defensive back Rolliann Sturkey motions for fans to cheer on the Chippewas during the MAC Championship game against Miami (OH) Dec. 7 at Ford Field in Detroit, MI.

Central Michigan has learned its bowl game destination.

The Chippewas are set to play San Diego State at 2 p.m. Dec. 21 in the New Mexico Bowl at Dreamstyle Stadium in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This is the fifth bowl game in the last six years and ninth since 2006.

Central Michigan hasn't won a bowl game since the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit, a 24-21 victory over Western Kentucky.

Jim McElwain, who promised to coach the bowl game despite coaching rumors, has the Chippewas at an 8-5 overall record after a 1-11 mark in 2018 under former coach John Bonamego.

The Chippewas are coming off a 26-21 loss to Miami (Ohio) in the Mid-American Conference championship game Saturday at Ford Field.
