EHS to host documentary screening and panel about rural school districts
Educators from across Michigan are participating in a documentary screening and panel discussion this Thursday.
The documentary and panel will begin at 5 p.m. Dec. 5 in French Auditorium in the Education and Human Services building.
"Heartbeat of the Community: Recruiting and Retaining Teachers in Rural Schools" is a 30-minute documentary collaboration between Detroit Public TV and Regional Education Laboratory Midwest. The documentary discusses how recruiting and retaining highly-qualified teachers is a ongoing struggle throughout rural school districts in the United States.
The panel will be facilitated by a staff member from Regional Education Laboratory Midwest. The panelists will discuss how recruiting and retention struggles has affected their rural communities.
Panelists include:
- Jillian Davidson, director of Clinical Experiences, Central Michigan University
- Jennifer Robel, department manager, Office of Educator Excellence, Michigan Department of Education
- Katherine Bertolini, superintendent, Maple Valley School District
- Heath Nestle, teacher, Shepherd Public Schools
- Dee Yarger, principal, Farwell Public Schools
The event will be free and open to the public. Those interested in attending should register for the event. Light refreshments will be provided.
