Baseball team led by pitching, defense despite just two hits offensively

Billy Anderson stood just in front of home plate staring at the scoreboard over the right-center field wall.

The scoreboard lights showed what the junior left fielder struggled to explain – the baseball team’s 3-0 win with just two hits.

With the win, CMU avoided a weekend sweep against Toledo after the team dropped the first two games to the Mid-American Conference West Division leader.

Waiting out a win

The baseball team avoided a sweep on the strength of Trent Howard’s complete game shutout against Toledo on Sunday.

The freshman left-hander gave up seven hits and while throwing more than 120 pitches in the Chippewas’ 3-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Theunissen Stadium.

Zeigler adds three from out-of-state to recruiting class

Men’s basketball coach Ernie Zeigler signed three recruits to national letters of intent this week and will soon finalize his roster for next season.

The Chippewas added high school guard Finis Craddock out of Garland, Texas, along with junior college forward William McClure of Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.

Baseball team travels to Toledo after MSU win

MIDLAND – Casey Ingle sat on the bench until the ninth inning, when the baseball team was behind 6-3.

He did not register an official at-bat, but his only plate appearance pushed CMU past Michigan State, 7-6, Wednesday at Dow Diamond in Midland.

With the bases loaded and no outs, MSU closer Peter Wolff hit Ingle, which allowed junior left fielder Billy Anderson to touch home plate for the game’s winning run.

Spring fever

The offense completed 71.9 percent of its passes (23-for-32) against the defense in the annual spring football game Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The secondary already has been a problem area for the defense, finishing last season with the 118th ranked pass defense.

Offense crucial for series at Ball State

The baseball team’s last Mid-American Conference series win came on March 28 by a 7-3 victory against Buffalo.

Now, three weeks later, the Chippewas play Ball State, opening the series at 3 p.m. today in Muncie, Ind. They will attempt to snap the two-series drought.

Freshmen make impact on mound for baseball team

Rick Dodridge walked off the mound in the seventh inning of last Wednesday’s game after putting his team in a position to beat Michigan.

The freshman left-hander allowed just five hits in 6 2/3 innings against one of CMU’s Big Ten in-state rivals.

Dodridge gave way to a fellow freshman – right-hander Zach Cooper – who did not allow a hit in his two innings on the mound.
