Life in Brief: Jewelry worth $4,586 stolen from Burch Street

The Mount Pleasant Police Department is investigating a larceny reported at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at 1208 Burch St., in which jewelry valued at $4,586 was taken. Police are interviewing a group of high school students that were at the residence Monday, said MPPD Public Information Officer Dave Sabuda. The mother of one of the students noticed the jewelry was missing after the group left.

LIFE IN BRIEF: Mr Rogers’ Sweater Drive

The third annual WCMU Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. now through Dec. 18 in central and northern Michigan. To collect new or gently-worn sweaters, WCMU is partnering with several organizations to give to those in need this winter. LIFE IN BRIEF: WWII Code talker to speak at 7 p.m. Monday

Keith Little, a World War II Navajo code talker, will speak about his role in the war at 7 p.m. today in the Bovee University Center Rotunda Room. “Not enough people know about it,” said Traverse City sophomore and Program Board cultural events chairwoman Amber Anderson. “It’s important to hear what the code talkers have to say before they all die.” The event is free.

LIFE IN BRIEF: ‘Faiths Around the World’ coming to Park Library

‘Faiths Around the World’

The “Faiths Around the World” exhibit is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Charles V. Park Library Extended Hours Study Room. The exhibit is of religious photography by Holton senior Jillian Pekel, who traveled to Rome, Italy and Japan and photographed different religious events.

LIFE IN BRIEF: Ziibiwing Center starts artist program

The Ziibiwing Center is presenting the first of its four Artists-in-Residence programs today through Saturday. The program will include activities for classroom groups from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and adult workshops from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The cost is $25 per person for the adult workshops. All workshops are at the Ziibiwing Center, 6650 E. Broadway St. Artists will focus on Great Lakes Indian art techniques. Student and adult programs must be booked in advance. LIFE IN BRIEF: Traffic light removal

The City of Mount Pleasant is removing two flashing red lights at two intersections today — Main and Broadway and Main and Michigan. The Mount Pleasant City Commission approved the removal of the lights at its Oct. 12 meeting. The lights were installed in 2005 to help drivers adjust to the intersections being four-way stops, but now the lights are being removed to save on electric costs. The intersection of Broadway and Washington also is a four-way stop. The flashing light will remain there to allow drivers to adjust. The Commission will evaluate the need for the light in the near future.

LIFE IN BRIEF: Lot 18 closed for Public Relations Internship Fair

Parking Lot 18, on the corner of Franklin and Preston streets, will be closed today for the Public Relations Internship Fair. The fair takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today on the top floor of the Bovee University Center. Various PR business and nonprofit organizations are participating. There is no charge for the event.
