Governor Jennifer Granholm accomplished little stopping at CMU

Gov. Granholm came to Central Michigan University last Thursday to rally for the Michigan Promise scholarship. If she’s serious about helping students out, Granholm should be rallying lawmakers, not students.

New federal program to reward funding for states that improve their school systems

President Barack Obama is still committed to funding education. The new federal program, Race to the Top, encourages each state to improve their education in order to take part in the $4.35 billion fund.

Gov. Granholm’s visit provides the perfect opportunity for students to speak up

Gov. Jennifer Granholm will be speaking at the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium this Thursday at 9:15 a.m. If students are serious about fighting for the Michigan Promise scholarship, they should attend the event and let our governor know.

Soccer team should be proud, despite second-round loss

The CMU soccer team lost to No. 5 Notre Dame in the first round of the playoffs. The soccer team shouldn’t be discouraged though, as they’ve proved themselves as a force during this season. Congratulations to the team on being MAC Champions.

University becomes untrustworthy when they don’t inform students of problems on campus

The university released the name of professors that were involved with plagiarizing the NSF grant. The university tried to cover up the issue by not being up front when the university had to give back the grant. This brings into question if students can trust the university on any issue.

Standardized testing does not achieve its aims

The state of Michigan uses standardized testing to value how well students are doing in high school. But the tests fail to report anything besides students who are good at repeating their teachers, and not how well they can think.

Department chairs and faculty have weak arguments against grade distribution

Some faculty members want the link to grade distributions on the Portal Web site taken down, even though they are public records. The faculty should be more focused on becoming better professors, and not about grade distributions influencing students’ choices when picking classes.

Soccer team is MAC Champions

The CMU soccer team won Sunday, earning their first MAC Championship. The team has had a fantastic season with a 17-game unbeaten streak and 13-game shut out streak. The team will enter the NCAA tournament and compete on a national level
