The CMU wrestling team finished its NCAA Tournament today with all three All-Americans losing in their consolation matches.
Redshirt freshman Ben Bennett started the day with a loss to Virginia’s No. 3 Chris Henrich, 5-3.
Redshirt freshman 174-pounder Ben Bennett pinned his opponent 44 seconds into the third round of his consolation match to secure All-America honors for the first time in his career.
Bennett followed that performance with another first-round pin to advance in the tournament. He takes on Virginia junior Christopher Henrich in the final day of the tournament for the opportunity to wrestle in the third-place match.
Tony D’Alie (149 pounds), Steve Brown (157), Ben Bennett (174) and Jarod Trice (285) all advanced with wins.
Matt Steintrager came to Central Michigan University with plenty of accolades — but it has taken him longer than most to add more in college.
Along with being a state champion his senior year in high school at Detroit Catholic Central, Steintrager also placed second at Senior Nationals and Junior Nationals.
No CMU wrestlers will have a chance at a national title after Day 1 at the NCAA Wrestling Championships in Omaha, Neb.
After picking up first-round wins to advance in the championship bracket, seniors Matt Steintrager, Conor Beebe, Tony D’Alie, Steve Brown, Tyler Grayson and redshirt freshman Ben Bennett all lost in the Round of 16.
Six CMU Wrestlers are still alive for individual NCAA Championships and all 10 are still in the tournament after Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament.
Sophomore Scotti Sentes got pinned in his pigtail match to start the day for the Chippewas, falling to the consolation bracket. But CMU went on a seven-match winning streak following the pin to tie for third place overall as a team with 15 points after Round 1.
No. 14 CMU achieved something never accomplished in school or Mid-American Conference history in sending a wrestler from all 10 weight classes this weekend to the NCAA Championships.
The Chippewas are one of four programs to have 10 qualifiers, along with Iowa, Iowa State and Oklahoma.
Staff Reporters Matthew Valinski and D.J. Palomares break down each weight class at the NCAA wrestling tournament and the chances of CMU wrestlers to obtain All-America status.
