It was four years ago a CMU medical school was first suggested. At the April 20, 2007 board of trustees meeting, Trustee Sam Kottamasu asked then-University President Michael Rao to explore the feasibility of a medical school at CMU because the mid-Michigan area was to see a short of up to 600 doctors in the near future.

Since then, CMU has received both criticism and recognition for its College of Medicine, but school administrators are no less certain of their intent to see the project through. (For more of this story …)

LCME Accreditation

There are 135 medical programs accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and 17 new developing programs such as at CMU, in the U.S.*Source: LCME website*

•Blue pins mean the school  has “applicant school” status, has paid the $25,000 application fee  and may not recruit or advertise for student applications.
•Red pins mean the school has “candidate school” status and has submitted the mandatory medical education database and planning self-study. This school is still not accredited and may not recruit or advertise for student applications.
•Yellow pins mean the school has “preliminary accreditation” status and has submitted an altered medical educational database and self-study summary. This school is to be surveyed by an LCME site team and may prepare for an incoming class of students.
•Purple pins mean the school has “provisional accreditation” status and has enrolled a charter class of students.
