Central Michigan's women's lacrosse team defeated Akron 11-7 on Sunday, April 21, at the CMU Lacrosse Complex. On offense, senior midfielder Sandy Edwards led CMU with four points. With the win, CMU remains undefeated in Mid-American Conference play with a 5-0 conference record. CMU is now 5-11 overall. CMU travels to Kent State to close out regular season play on Saturday, April 27 in Kent, Ohio.
Indian Student Association hosts Indian Night on Saturday, April 20 in Finch Fieldhouse. The event, which was a celebration of Indian culture, featured traditional foods, dancing, singing and more.
Central Michigan's softball team lost both games to Miami (Ohio) in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 at Margo Jonker Stadium. CMU lost the first game 0-16 and the second game 6-15. CMU is now 9-7 in Mid-American Conference play and 12-26 overall.
Central Michigan University students, facility and friends participate in a peaceful protest to help promote awareness and policy change on Saturday, April 20. Participants carried signs advocating for reform and chanted throughout the march, "'Hey-hey, ho-ho, racism's gotta go." The march started on the front lawn of the Bovee UC and trailed through every part of campus.
The Central Michigan University Theater and Dance Department hosts the University Theater Dance Company Concert (UTDC) dress rehearsal, Wednesday, April 17, in Bush Theater. The show features staff and student-choreographed pieces along with student dancers. The dancers performed April 18-20 at 7:30pm and April 21 at 2:00pm in Bush Theater.
Central Michigan University's Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts the Multiperspective Panel on Gaza on Thursday, April 18, in the Bovee UC Auditorium. The panel consisted of Dr. Nimir Ikram, Dalton Bradford, Brian Zhao, Julie Christensen and Susan Eltell. The event was to help attendees hear diverse perspectives on the genocide that is occurring in Gaza.
Central Michigan University Students gather on the Bovee UC front lawn Wednesday, April 17, and Thursday, April 18, to protest the recent events that have occurred this week, beginning April 14th after footage of students saying a racial slur came out. Students want change and are hosting protests and meetings making that change happen. Following these stationed protests will be a peaceful protest and march on Saturday, April 20, meeting on the Bovee UC front lawn at 1:00pm.
The Board of Trustees meets to discuss different affairs across the campus of Central Michigan University, Thursday, April 18, in the Bovee University Center President's Conference Room. The meeting covered several topics such as comments from students, a presentation to the Board of Trustees from the dean of the College of Science and Engineering, endowments and awards, and many more topics.
CMU Climate Solution Summit with Speaker Jim MacInne was hosted for Earth Month, Wednesday, April 17, in the Dow Science Complex 102. The following event for Earth Month that is held by Central Sustainability will be CMUs annual Peace Flag raising ceremony which will be outside of Warriner Hall, Friday, April 19.
Student Advocates for Prison Reform and the Incarcerated, Muslim Student Association and Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts Faith Behind Bars: Challenging Denial of Religious Rights in Prison as part of Arab American Heritage Month events on Wednesday, April 17 in French Auditorium. CMU seniors Ku'Juana Quinn and Mahum Hakim presented about ways Muslims face discrimination while in prison, and addressed topics such as the first amendment and relevant lawsuits in Michigan. The event concluded with a Kahoot and an open discussion about ways students can be involved in allyship, advocacy and activism.
LGBTQ Services & Gender Equity invites Drag Queens Cherry Poppins, Vivienne Vice, Remington Rose, and performer Cocky Divine to visit CMU and fabulously entertain CMU students, filling the room with much laughter and bringing smiles to many faces on Tuesday, April 16 in the Bovee UC Auditorium.
The Grand Rapids Comic Con Spring Fling was held Friday, April 12 to Sunday, April 14, at the Kalamazoo County Event & Expo Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Comic Con is an event for popular arts, comic and media enthusiasts to meet one another. There were vendors, cosplayers and celebrity guests Comic Con attendees could meet.
Central Michigan's softball team won both games against Buffalo in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 at Margo Jonker Stadium. CMU took the first game with a score of 3-0. CMU won the second game 8-0 with a walk-off home run by freshman Keira Tolmie, her first with the Chippewas. The wins bring CMUs records to 7-5 in Mid-American Conference play and 10-24 overall.
Feminist Leaders on Campus hosts Slutwalk, a march and rally against sexual violence, victim blaming and rape culture on Saturday, April 13 across the campus of Central Michigan University and into surrounding neighborhoods. The event, which first originated in Toronto in 2011, began at CMU in 2013. Following the march, which included chants such as "No means no" and "Consent is mandatory", attendees gathered around the CMU Seal for performances and an open mic.
The Central Michigan University softball team defeats Buffalo 9-0, Friday, April 12, in Margo Jonker Stadium. This game was their first Autism Acceptance Game where audience members were encouraged to wear gold. The Central Michigan Autism Spectrum Club came to the game; the president, Alexandria Alma sang the National Anthem and secretary John Criger threw the first pitch.
Central Michigan University's fraternities and sororities competed in Mock Rock on Thursday, April 11 in McGuirk Arena. The event is part of Greek Week 2024, which is themed "Coast to Coast". Greek organizations teamed up in groups named after cities across the U.S. to perform choreographed dances in order to win points. In between the team dances, the event also featured performances from fraternities and sororities belonging to the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council.
This year, Greek Week is raising money for the B#4 Foundation, which promotes mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The organization was created in honor of Brady Hessbrook, a Wayne State University student who took his own life in 2023. Amid the energetic dancing and loud cheering that filled McGuirk Arena, each team's performances also featured handmade signs with messages in support of the B#4 Foundation, such as "You are not alone" and "In memory of Brady Hessbrook".
The Student Creative and Research Endeavors Exhibition (SCREE) was held for Central Michigan University students to showcase their work throughout college, Wednesday, April 10, in Finch Fieldhouse. Undergraduate and graduate students were able to show their work and share their research with the community. This event had food, music, and dance displays, and students showed their research. Attendees were able to vote for their favorite display for the "People's Choice Award."
Central Michigan University's Multicultural Academic Student Services hosts APAHM event Origami Night on Tuesday, April 9 in Kulhavi Hall 141 and 142. Attendees got to follow origami instructions in rotating rooms to learn two different origami shapes, the butterfly and the dove. The event allowed attendees to learn new skills, try new snacks and help with community bonding.
Multicultural Academic Student Services and junior Mayada Al-Ahmad host the 'All Arabs Are' Stereotype Panel as part of Arab American Heritage Month events Monday, April 8, in the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium. Junior Christya Haddad presented on stereotypes about Arab Christians and drew from her experiences growing up in Lebanon. CMU alumna Julie Christensen spoke virtually about living and teaching in Kuwait and her journey as a Muslim revert. The event aimed to break down misconceptions leave attendees with a new perspective.
