Duke escapes, Kansas State rolls

Duke 71, Belmont 70
No. 15 Belmont had the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining Thursday, but Duke's Gerald Henderson took the ball the length of the floor for the game-winning layup with 13 seconds left. Justin Hare's last-second 3-point heave fell short at the buzzer and No. 2 Duke escaped to the second round.

Kansas State 80, USC 67
KSU led the majority of the game and took a 37-27 lead into halftime. But USC rallied to tie the score at 48 with 12 minutes, 40 seconds remaining. But USC went without a field goal for nearly eight minutes, beginning with 11:48 remaining. KSU freshman Michael Beasley finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while USC freshman O.J. Mayo scored 20 points and had five assists.

Texas A&M 67, BYU 62
Josh Carter scored 26 points and Joseph Jones had 10 and 12 rebounds for the No. 9 Aggies as they won a tightly contested game in Anaheim, Calif.

Stanford 77, Cornell 53
No. 13 Cornell shot a paltry 30.5 percent from the field while No. 3 Stanford shot 55.4 in Anaheim, Calif. Kenny Brown scored 18 points for Stanford, which now plays No. 6 Marquette in Saturday's second round. Cornell finished 14-0 in the Ivy League, but had its 16-game winning streak ended. Stanford ended the first half on a 23-5 run to take a 38-17 lead headed into the break.

Washington State 71, Winthrop 40
The game was tied at 29 at halftime, but WSU began the second half on 23-4 run to pull away for the win. Winthrop only had 11 second-half points.

Purdue 90, Baylor 79
A big first half, in which the No. 6 Boilermakers outscored No. 11 Baylor 46-27, made the difference in Washington, D.C. It was Purdue's 10th straight first round victory. The Bears, meanwhile extended their 58-year winless drought in the tournament.

Pittsburgh 82,
Oral Roberts 63
An 18-0 first-half run propelled No. 4 Pittsburgh to its sixth consecutive win after winning the Big East. Levance Fields scored 23 points for the Panthers.
