Mount Pleasant City Commissioners have strong ties to the community.

Many either grew up in the area or attended CMU.

There's more to Mount Pleasant than Central Michigan University.

"I came to school here, fell in love with the city, met my wife, and stayed," said Commissioner Keith Spycher.

Spycher has been volunteering for the city for nearly to 20 years.

He is one of seven residents who sets the city's agenda. The group votes on everything from city budgets to zoning issues.

Commissioner Jim Holton said his job is all about checks and balances.

"I don't like wasteful spending or inefficient government," Holton said.

He said the best way students can help Mount Pleasant deal with the challenges is simply to become familiar with the city.

"Knowing the city is the best education of all," Holton said.

For Commissioner Bruce Kilmer, politics is a family affair. Kilmer's wife served on the commission for nine years and served as mayor last year.

Bruce Kilmer said he wants to help bring Mount Pleasant together.

"Businesses, CMU, the tribe (Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe), surrounding townships; we're all in this together," Kilmer said.

Kilmer, who also serves on the CMU City Liaison board, encouraged students to get involved with the board to better connect with their city.

Commissioner James Moreno said he joined the commission six years ago to address social justice issues.

"Some people are not being represented," he said. "Lots of what the commission does affects students and young people."

Mount Pleasant Mayor Jon Joslin said one way students can get involved is by attending commission meetings, which take place at 7 p.m. every second and fouth Monday at City Hall, 401 N. Main St.

"The best thing any student can do is bring fresh new ideas," he said. "If they don't get involved, we can't hear them."
