A crowd filled the Indoor Athletic Complex on Friday to spend the morning with Emmy-winning sportscaster and CMU alumnus Dick Enberg.

Athletics Director Dave Heeke and University President Michael Rao introduced Enberg, followed by the unveiling of the Dick Enberg Academic Center in the Indoor Athletic Complex.

"We're here today to honor one of CMU's most respected alumni," Heeke said. "Dick represents the best of CMU."

Enberg, a 1957 CMU grad, boasts a broadcasting repertoire including Wimbledon, Super Bowls and the Olympics.

The crowd welcomed the sportscaster, who has 50 years in the business, with a standing ovation and the CMU fight song.

"I am humbled," Enberg said, as he admitted to fighting back tears.

During his speech he reminisced on his career and his time at CMU.

Enberg told the audience if it was not for former University President Charles Anspach sending him a $100 academic scholarship, he would not have had the chance to attend CMU.

He said CMU "gave us a chance, it took a total nobody and turned him into a somebody."

Rao said Enberg is a role model for CMU students.

"You are an unbelievable ambassador for CMU," he said. "You always talked about your alma mater with pride."

During the ceremony two awards created by Enberg were handed out, the first student athlete of the year award and the team leadership award.

Wrestler Wynn Michalak, a Caro senior, won Athlete of the Year.

"It's a great honor," he said. "Everyone knows his name and it is an honor to have mine associated with it now."

Enberg found a comical coincidence in the award.

"Isn't it nice the first winner's name is 'Wynn'" he joked. "When I came they called me a loser."

The women's soccer team won the team leadership award with a team grade-point average of 3.73.

New York senior Laura Gaesser said the award was a huge honor for her team.

"It gives our team great motivation in the classroom and on the field," she said. "We really appreciate it because it shows our hard work and dedication."

An additional scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman from a rural area.

Enberg said his roots were humble and he hitchhiked to CMU to start classes.

The Dick Enberg Academic Center now displays many of Enberg's achievements, such as his 2004 Sports Emmy Award and pictures of Enberg golfing alongside Bob Hope and former presidents Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush.
