Leadership can take many forms - some of them unexpected.
At Central Michigan University, Lead Week includes a rock climbing wall, quiz bowl, pie-eating contest, tug-of-war, an obstacle course and a one-mile run at 9 p.m. tonight at the fountain near the East Area Residence Halls
The week's events will start off with a free concert featuring a student jazz combo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in the Down Under Food Court, located in the lower level of the Bovee University Center, and includes additional lectures throughout the week.
The Leadership Institute hopes to raise at least $500 to give to United Way through during the fifth annual Lead Week.
"It gives the Leadership Institute a chance to reach out to students and get them involved with leadership programs," said Kelly Morse, a Constantine junior and co-chair of the Lead Week committee.
Also included is a competition between registered student organizations at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Finch Fieldhouse.
Students can form their own groups for the competition with other students from their residence halls, or just a random group of friends. Each team is limited to six to 10 people.
"Students like being able to come with a group of their peers to compete with their other peers, and it's interactive, so it's fun," said Crysta Maurer, Harbor Beach senior and co-chair of the Lead Week committee.
Student organizations also have a chance to earn points through their participation in these contests and attendance at the various lectures and other events.
RSOs can earn points by finding their own ways to raise money, which will be donated to United Way. Each dollar raised is worth one point.
The money and the points will be tallied and announced Friday at a CMU volleyball game. The winning organization will get a gift certificate for free Papa John's pizza for their members, Morse said.
"Last year, we had a pretty good turnout," Morse said. "But this year, we're hoping to have an awesome turnout."
