Improving state parks
Student research
Jennifer Thelen presented her research to the Michigan Museums Association and the Association of Midwest Museums. The Shepherd senior surveyed visitors at Ludington State Park to find out how parks can improve programs and increase attendance. Her research showed 96 percent of visitors who attended one program chose to sign up for another. She also found a majority of the park's visitors live in Michigan's lower peninsula. Thelen also shared her results at a conference on Mackinac Island in September. Her work was sponsored by university grant funds set aside to promote student participation in presenting research to professional organizations. Thelen started the surveys as part of the Honors Program requirements.
Missing body found
Cause of death not yet determined
Hunters found the skeletal remains of a missing Edmore man Wednesday in Montcalm County. Brett Laurence Papendick disappeared March 26. He was 37. A Michigan State University forensic anthropologist identified Papendick using dental records. He was not officially listed as missing until May 14, because he had a history of leaving home for several days at a time. Two bow hunters found the body in a field north of M-46. The cause of death has not yet been determined, however foul play does not appear to be a factor. Papendick's disappearance and death currently are under investigation. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
