Freshman Derek Thomas' overtime goal lifted the club hockey team to a 3-2 win Friday against Kansas.
The key to the game was the team's defense, something it was looking to improve on.
"First and second period, our team D was phenomenal," said coach Chris Lipar. "They had 11 shots. Anytime you keep a team under 20 shots, that's huge."
The win snaps Central's two-game losing streak.
"It was really important," Thomas said. "I felt we played well the last couple games and were coming off two losses, so it's really good to get that win."
The only defensive lapse the team had was in the sixth minute of the first period. CMU gave up two goals less than 30 seconds apart, falling into an early 2-0 deficit.
The team responded though, as senior alternate captain Steve Myers scored on a pass from senior Aaron Jelleberg and sophomore Brandon Hentrich 9 minutes, 25 seconds into the first to bring CMU within one. Junior Tim Marttila then found Thomas open in front to tie the score at 2 at the 16:25 mark in the period.
"We knew we were going to get goals back against them, it was just we had to stop them from scoring any more, and I think we did a good job at doing that," said senior captain Craig Lipar.
The score would remain the same throughout the rest of regulation. CMU couldn't get anything going offensively because of 10 penalties, but its team defense and senior goaltender Mike Jakubic played well and got the game into an extra frame.
Thomas scored his second goal of the night at 2:08 in the extra period on a pass from a teammate in a one-on-one situation with Kansas' goaltender.
"I shook him a little bit and he froze up, so one quick move and there it was," Thomas said.
The team's next games are Oct. 26 and 27 at home against Dayton. Both games start at 9 p.m. at the Isabella Country Events Arena.
