The field hockey team gets to find out today just how much it has improved in recent weeks.

CMU welcomes No. 5 Michigan (11-4 overall, 5-0 Big Ten) at 3 p.m. to the Field Hockey Complex. Although the non-conference game does not count toward the team's Mid-American Conference seeding, the Chippewas look at this game as a measuring stick for where they stand.

"I'm excited for us to have the Michigan game," said coach Cristy Freese. "When we step up and play our game, we can beat anyone we play."

Central (5-8, 4-2 MAC) last faced a top five team Sept. 26 when it defeated then fifth-ranked Michigan State, 3-2. Central is 5-2 since that game.

Junior midfielder and co-captain Moyra Betuzzi had a goal in the MSU game. She said while it would be nice to beat Michigan, the team is hoping to continue to build on its recent progress.

"We're focused on being able to play a full-field game," Betuzzi said. "Playing is always better than practicing. If we get a win, that's great, but we're just building for this weekend with two more tough conference games."

Freese said U-M coach Nancy Cox likely has reminded her players of the Chippewas' 3-2 win against the Spartans.

The Chippewas want to continue to play at a high level and complete aggressively for 70 minutes, something Freese called them out for last Sunday against Missouri State.

"After we score a goal we want to keep our defense strong," said sophomore forward Allyce Avery. "This is a great opportunity to play a real game during the week. If we play well we'll be satisfied."

While games are more beneficial than practice, CMU continues to work on playing those games at the same level in which they practice.

That's the team's goal for today against the Wolverines.

"It's a booster if we win against No. 5, but we just want to do our best and focus on the things that we've been working on in practice," said sophomore back Tara Schiltz.
