CLEMSON, S.C. - The football team got off to a fast start when it took its opening drive for a touchdown against Clemson on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The rest of the game was a different story.

The Tigers responded by scoring 42 unanswered points en route to defeating the Chippewas 70-14.

Clemson used a balance of running and passing, piling up more than 300 yards in both, in its 35 minutes and 25 seconds of possession.

"Any time you leave your defense on the field for an extended period of time, you see what happens," said coach Butch Jones. "You see the results."

CMU opened the game with a 13-play, 68-yard drive, capped by LeFevour's touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Duane Brooks. The touchdown catch was Brooks' first of his career.

On Clemson's opening drive, sophomore cornerback Josh Gordy got his fourth interception in two games off a pass from quarterback Cullen Harper in the end zone. A holding penalty forced CMU to punt shortly after getting the ball.

Clemson running back James Davis scored on a one-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 0:57 remaining in the first quarter.

The Tigers took over in the second quarter when Harper threw four touchdown passes to give them a 35-7 lead heading into halftime.

Harper finished 20-for-22 for 273 yards while setting a school record with 15 consecutive pass completions.

"The one throw early was a poor throw, but that was about it," said Clemson coach Tommy Bowden, referring to Gordy's interception. "You can see how accurate (Harper) is."

Clemson punted on its opening drive in the third quarter, but the ball hit a CMU player and was recovered by cornerback Crezdon Butler at CMU's one-yard line. Clemson running back C. J. Spiller scored the touchdown on the following play.

The Chippewas (4-4 overall, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) responded with their second touchdown, a four-yard pass from LeFevour to Brooks, to make the score 42-14.

Clemson's Jacoby Ford returned the following kickoff 82 yards to CMU's 13-yard line, setting up Davis' one-yard touchdown run to make the score 49-14.

Freshman returner Antonio Brown fumbled on the ensuing kickoff, setting up Clemson's third touchdown of the quarter. The Tigers then scored on a 63-yard run by Sadat Chambers and a 11-yard touchdown pass by Tribble Reese to round out the scoring.

LeFevour finished 20-for-34 for 204 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Spiller finished with 15 carries for 96 yards, while Davis compiled 90 yards on 22 carries.

CMU returns to MAC play next week when it travels to Kent State on Saturday.

"All of our goals that we set forth at the beginning of the season are still intact," Jones said. "That's what we've got to keep our eyes on."

"All of our goals are still in tact?"

What goals are those? An embarassment for all time. A year ago we were playing BC, Kentucky, and Michigan tough and in each game. (Continued…)

Technically the goals of MAC champs and playing in a bowl game are alive. If CMU beats either EMU or WMU they will clinch the division and play in the MAC title game (lets thank Ball St for not making yesterday a total disaster). (Continued…)
