There's nothing secretive about Central Michigan University's CMU 2010 Vision Plan.

But that's one of the perceptions officials said they've come into contact with.

"One problem since we started is distrust," said Catherine Riordan, vice provost for Academic Affairs. "People thought we had a hidden agenda with 2010 so we moved immediately to the Web so people can see what our 'hidden agendas' are."

Members of the campus community got a chance to comment on the future of CMU during Wednesday's "Realizing the Vision" forum in Charles V. Park Library Auditorium.

CMU 2010 addresses how the university should grow over the next few years and is a five-year plan developed in 2004 and implemented in 2005.

On the 2010 Web site, planning.cmich.edu, there is a list of five priorities and 18 key performance indicators that make up 2010.

The indicators measure the progress of CMU 2010 and were approved by University President Michael Rao in April.

"We are comparing us to ourselves," Riordan said. "KPIs show CMU's progress over the years."

One of the things the 2010 plan would like to do accomplish is to gather more input from the university community. The forum attempted to this by handing out informal surveys.

Members of the audience were given sheets and were asked to write down which of the priorities and key performance indicators applied to them.

Becky Oosterhoff, a research analyst for Academic Affairs, chose priority 5: Culture of integrity and KPI 17: Student satisfaction.

"I encourage students to get involved," Oosterhoff said. "They need to become engaged with everything they do on campus."

CMU 2010 has funded 28 projects which, in line with the mission statement, will help 2010 make CMU a "nationally prominent university known for integrity, academic excellence, research and creative activity and public service."

Another request for proposals will start in spring 2008, with the next being introduced in 2009.

"The new plan will be building on what we've already done, improving what we've done well and what we haven't done well," Riordan said.

At a July 12 meeting, Board of Trustees Chair Jeff Caponigro said the plan brings the best out of CMU.

"The vision is to have national prominence in research and to maintain the quality of education," he said.
