Two CMU professors are scoring high on ratemyprofessor.com's first "Top 50 List."

Tim Brannan, an assistant professor in teacher education and professional development, was ranked 19th on the list. Holly Hoffman, a counseling and special education instructor, was rated 33rd.

The list is compiled of the Web site's highest rated professors from across the nation.

The Web site gives students a place to share information and opinions about their instructors. The five categories in which they can be rated are easiness, helpfulness, clarity, quality and even hotness.

"I didn't know I was on the list. It was a nice surprise and I agree with most of the ratings, except for easiness, of course," Brannan said. "It's only easy if you come to class and do the work."

Brannan has been teaching for five years at CMU. He also taught at Lansing Community College and Michigan State University.

"Teaching is in my genes, I guess," Brannan said. "It has always been a part of me. Teaching runs way back in my family."

Hoffman, who has taught at the college-level for 10 years, said the students really do know her personality.

"I love my job because every day is different and there is never a dull moment," Hoffman said. "I read some of the comments and they were totally on. I can be a little weird at times and just a little scatter-brained."

She said she enjoys the positive feedback she gets back from students.

"They make me love my job. I just try to be helpful and approachable," she said.

Greenville junior Josh Stek is a student in SPE 126: Introduction to Special Education, a course Hoffman teaches.

Stek said Hoffman is at the top of his personal list of professors at CMU.

"Her personality, it's very energetic," he said. "She's a little disorganized, but extremely focused."

Hoffman said she thinks CMU is lucky to have such great professors and students.

"The coincidence that both professors on the list were from the education department just goes to show that CMU values education," she said.
