Departmental budgets must be submitted today

Today is the deadline for Central Michigan University departments to submit new budgets that include a .5 percent budget reduction.

The budgets will be turned in at the vice presidential level, following a request this summer by University President Michael Rao, who will receive the cut suggestions by the end of the month.

The reduction is designed to counter a $1.3 million cut in state funding in May, said Barrie Wilkes, interim vice president of financial and administrative services.

Though the May cut was made in the last fiscal year, he said, budgets could not be adequately examined until this year.

"That's what units are doing, or have been doing," Wilkes said.

Wilkes said he could not comment specifically on what will be cut. He said the cuts are each handled at the vice presidential level, and each vice president can decide which departments will receive which cuts.

Several deans contacted by Central Michigan Life for this story also would not comment on the cuts before today's deadline.

Many of the departments fall under the academic colleges.

In August, Dean of the College of Science and Technology Robert Kohrman said his college will have more than $100,000 in cuts.

"It's tough," he said. "It's a very serious cut to our programs."

In an e-mail earlier in October, he said the complete budget still had not been finalized.

Dean of the College of Education and Human Services Karen Adams also said earlier this month her college's budget still was being completed

Given the state's current economic situation, Wilkes said, next fiscal year's funding remains uncertain.
